Approved Buyer

A breeder confirms the suitability of a buyer for their pets. Each breeder has different criteria based on the pets that they raise. They may include criteria such as: indoor only, 2hrs+ exercise daily, no young children, no other pets, must have 2 together, rural/lifestyle only among other things. It is the breeders prerogative to select homes they are comfortable with homing a pet into. If you are not accepted onto your chosen breeders approved buyer list (they do not have to provide a reason), it could be prudent to re-evaluate your chosen breed. Is your home suitable for that time of breed? If yes, then contact a different breeder, ensuring you reasons are included in your Environmental Suitability Questions. If no, look for a breed that would be more suitable to your home environment. Choosing a pet is not about a look, rather one that integrates well into your home and suits your lifestyle.

Backyard breeder

A term given to a breeder who is NOT registered with a registering body. Generally it describes amateur breeders, whose breeding is considered substandard with little regard for animal welfare and high regard for profit. Pets from these breeders do not have any papers and are not registered. They do not usually perform genetic testing and often have health concerns.

Biography

The information supplied in your biography is to enable the breeder to determine the suitability of your home for the breed you are enquiring about. Some breeds have specific care requirements that need to be met. Being able to demonstrate you understand the breed and have researched it prior to contacting a breeder shows you are committed to providing a quality forever home for one of their precious pets. It is our recommendation that you provide a comprehensive insight into the prospective pets new home environment and family, reducing the need for breeders to ask you additional questions, over and above those which are requested by Pedigree Pets.

Breeder

A term used for people who breed pets. Each breeder on Pedigree Pets is confirmed as being registered with a registering body (in NZ this is either Dogs NZ, New Zealand Cat Fancy Inc or Catz Incorporated) prior to activation of their profile and their membership is reconfirmed annually.

Buyer

A term used for people seeking a pedigree pet for their home (either as a pet or for breeding purposes). If buying for breeding purposes, you MUST also be a breeder (refer to definition above).

Designer Pets

These are cross bred animals, eg Labradoodles, Cavoodles, etc. They are not pedigree pets and sit in the realm of backyard breeders. They are usually accompanied with large price tags (often more than an actual pedigree), with even larger vet bills as the unknown genetics play out over the lifetime of the pet.

Desexing Contract

A pet who has not been fixed prior to going to its new home will come with a desexing contract. This is a contract signed by both the buyer & the breeder, confirming that the pet will be de-sexed by the time it reaches a certain age. In these cases, it is normal for the breeder to withhold the pedigree papers until confirmation is received from the vet showing the pet has been desexed.

Early Spey/Neuter (ESN)

For many cat breeders this is now standard practice in that ALL kittens are de-sexed prior to homing. If a pet is sold un-desexed, expect a desexing contract from your breeder and ensure you comply with it. The cost of the desexing then usually falls to the buyer.

Feedback

Buyers are required to place feedback after a pet has been homed, at intervals of 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and then annually. Not only does this provide the breeder information about their breeding program (health, genetics etc) it provides transparency for future buyers in establishing a breeders reputation.

Membership

Buyers are able to use this site free of charge. Breeders are charged NZ$120 (inc gst) per year for unlimited use membership. Breeders membership is confirmed with their registering body prior to activation and then annually thereafter.

Microchips

All pets are microchipped prior to leaving their breeder AND registered on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) with the new owners details. It is recommended that buyers request their vets scan their pets shortly after arrival then annually thereafter. Buyers should also confirm the microchip number received with their pets paperwork, matches the email from the NZCAR.
